French, born in 1959 in Nevers, France
Lives and works in Cluny, France

After studying ceramics at l?Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliqués in Paris, Valerie Hermans became entranced by calligraphy and Chinese painting, which she studied with Korean Master Ung-No-Lee. Hermans practiced the art of paper and ink in parallel with the art of ceramics. These two distinct experiences and aesthetic traditions are the essence of her work and  are at the root to her sensitivity toward the purity of shapes, the justness of a line, the balance of a volume, and a unique way of observing objects as a combination of void and matter. Her ceramics, precise and deliberate, exude spirituality and poetry.
