Aya Hatano
Lives and works in Japan
Aya Hatano is a contemporary ceramic sculptor whose work explores the intersection of form, repetition, and emotional resonance through the medium of clay. Although she initially trained in sculpture and worked with materials like wood, metal, and stone, it was clay that captivated her with its potential for organic expression and tactile exploration. Her early experiments were self-guided, allowing her to develop an intuitive understanding of the material without formal instruction.
Aya's practice centers on repetitive, symmetrical patterns that connect with universal themes and the natural world. Drawing from ancient traditions, these motifs reflect collective histories and the act of mark-making, a thread that runs through her journey from painting to ceramic sculpture. Her designs evolve through repetition, responding to both personal and cultural influences.
Her approach to clay is intuitive and exploratory. While each piece begins with a general vision, the process unfolds naturally, balancing intention with improvisation. This results in harmonious forms created with a keen attention to structure, texture, and surface detail.
Notable milestones in Aya’s career include receiving the Young Talent Award at the 2023 Biennale de Kikuchi and being selected for the 2024 Mino International Ceramics Festival, further establishing her place within the global ceramic community.
Aya is currently working on a series inspired by the passage of time, experimenting with glazes that evoke the weathered qualities of ancient artifacts. She continues to push the boundaries of ceramic sculpture while remaining grounded in her exploration of repetition, symmetry, and emotional depth.
Through her work, Aya Hatano offers a contemporary reflection on the enduring relationship between humanity and the natural world, inviting us to reconsider timeless patterns that are both personal and universal.
