French, born in 1947 in Sens
Lives and works in Morvan, France

Alain Vernis was born in 1946 in Sens. After completing his studies in 1968, he embarked on an extensive series of travels to India, Laos, Burma, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kenya, Yemen, Ethiopia...

In 1985, he established his workshop in the High Morvan, a region with harsh winters where the ground can remain frozen for long months. There, he led a life of solitude, relying on what the challenging yet, in his eyes, generous nature provided. Out of necessity and a deep-seated commitment, he independently delved into ceramics using the local clays and minerals, immersing himself entirely in this practice, experimenting with it empirically.

While Alain Vernis primarily creates bowls, he says, "it is probably because the bowl is a primal, instinctive form for a sculptor driven by the observation of reality."

Each of his bowls is unique, not only in shape but also in the very composition of the clay, coverings, slips, and glazes, often designed for a single piece.

"In this relationship to matter, decision belongs to the soil. Each bowl is but the reflection of the unspoken silence that oozes out of the attentive listening to the act of shaping: a long wandering meditation where the mineral takes the fingers through a writing where inside and outside are one. Engobe and enamel, conceived to help each bowl breathe, will coat the « work » within the flow of the season’s colour and light. And if white, this gift from heaven prevails, it is the sign of its longtime presence on the highest Morvan hills."
